Two Construction Workers Rescued After Trench Collapse At V&A Waterfront, Cape Town

Two construction workers were pulled to safety after a trench collapsed at a construction site at Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront on Friday.

The incident happened during ongoing work at the popular precinct, prompting an emergency response to ensure the workers’ safe retrieval.

According to the V&A Waterfront, the collapse occurred while repairs were under way as part of an infrastructure project.

Trench Collapse During V&A Waterfront Infrastructure Repairs

V&A Waterfront spokesperson David Kau said the workers were protected by safety measures already in place at the site.

“Two workers were trapped but saved by the protection shoring that is part of the trench they were working in. Both workers have been retrieved and are receiving [medical treatment],” he said.

City Fire and Rescue Responds to Cape Town Construction Site Incident

Kau confirmed that City Fire and Rescue services were on the scene at the time of the incident and carried out the rescue operation to free the trapped workers.

Emergency teams worked to secure the area while the retrieval was under way, bringing the situation under control.

SurgeZirc SA requested additional details about the collapse from one of the workers, but no response has been received.
