2 Armed Suspects Killed In Violent Shootout  As Police Operation Targets ATM Bombing Syndicate

Two armed suspects were fatally shot, and several others were injured in a dramatic shootout with police in Lenasia on Tuesday night, 11 March 2025.

The confrontation took place during a Crime Intelligence-led operation, which was part of a broader effort to dismantle a syndicate allegedly involved in multiple ATM bombings and other serious criminal activities across Gauteng and neighboring provinces.

The operation, carried out in close coordination with various law enforcement units, culminated in a violent exchange of gunfire.

While police continue to investigate, the crime scene remains active as forensic teams gather evidence and attempt to piece together the events leading to the deadly encounter.

Several of the suspects who were injured during the shootout have been arrested and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Suspects Linked To String Of Serious Crimes

Authorities have confirmed that the suspects were connected to a wave of ATM bombings, a highly destructive crime wave that has plagued the region in recent months.

This encounter comes at a time of heightened concern over crime in Lenasia. The area has recently witnessed a spate of violent incidents, including the murder of 27-year-old Ashwin Mouwers in January 2025.

Mouwers was gunned down outside the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court, where he had been scheduled to testify in an ongoing murder trial.

In response to this escalating crisis, Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lt. General Shadrack Sibiya, along with senior SAPS officials, has been on the ground in Lenasia.

They have pledged to continue their efforts to combat organised crime and ensure justice for the victims of these brutal acts.
