16-Year-Old Arrested In Roodepoort For Possession Of Explosives

Roodepoort police have arrested a 16-year-old boy accused of possessing and distributing explosives. The teenager is expected to appear in court soon following his arrest earlier this week.

Authorities confirmed that officers acted on intelligence about an individual allegedly selling explosive materials in and around Mohlakeng. The information led investigators to a specific address in Roodepoort, where the arrest was carried out.

Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk confirmed the seizure of a significant quantity of explosive items during the operation.

Roodepoort Police Seize Blasting Cartridges and Detonating Equipment

According to van Wyk, officers confiscated multiple items believed to be used in criminal activities.

“Information reportedly led the team to an identified address in Roodepoort where they arrested the teenager and seized 50 blasting cartridges, 25 safety fuse connectors, and detonating cords.”

The confiscated materials are commonly associated with high-risk criminal acts. Police have raised concerns over the potential misuse of such explosives in violent operations.

Explosives Linked to Cash-in-Transit Heists and Illegal Mining, Say Authorities

Van Wyk warned that the type of explosives recovered are frequently used in serious organised crime.

“She added that such explosives are mainly used in serious crimes, including cash-in-transit robberies and illegal mining.”

Investigators are now working to determine how the teenager allegedly obtained the materials and whether broader criminal syndicates are involved.
