16 Killed After Bus Carrying 73 Passengers Overturns On N1 Near Touws River

At least 16 people have died after a bus carrying 73 South African residents overturned on the N1 near Touws River in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Two other passengers sustained serious injuries in the crash, while emergency services remained at the scene as recovery operations continued.

Western Cape traffic chief Maxine Bezuidenhout said the crash happened at about 12am.
“We confirm an incident on the N1 near Touws River at approximately 12am on Thursday, where a bus transporting 73 South African residents has overturned,” she said.

“Tragically, 16 people have lost their lives, while two others sustained serious injuries.”
Traffic Delays Expected Following N1 Crash
Authorities have introduced a stop-and-go system on the affected section of the N1 to allow emergency and recovery teams to work safely.
Bezuidenhout urged motorists travelling through the area to remain patient.
“Expect delays as emergency and recovery operations continue,” she said.
The cause of the crash has not yet been established.
Investigations are expected to determine what led to the bus overturning.
