145 Global Art Masterpieces Return To Johannesburg For Long-Awaited Homecoming Exhibition

Johannesburg is celebrating the long-awaited return of 145 treasured artworks that spent the past decade touring globally. First loaned to Italy in 2015 and later displayed in South Korea, the pieces have finally come home and are now showcased at the Standard Bank Art Gallery.

At the official launch of the Homecoming Exhibition, 30 of these works were revealed to the public, marking the start of a renewed chapter for the city’s artistic legacy. The full collection is expected to be accessible to residents from next year.

The exhibition features an extraordinary range of creators, including Picasso, Monet, Degas, Turner, and Rossetti, alongside prominent South African and international artists who have shaped global art history.

Global Icons Reunited with South Africa’s Artistic Heritage

Standard Bank’s Yolisa Koza noted that the event is not only a celebration of the artworks’ return but also a reminder of the vital role art plays in Johannesburg’s cultural landscape and Africa’s advancement.

Spanning centuries, the pieces offer insight into diverse geographical, cultural, and historical narratives.

JAG co-curator Khwezi Gule highlighted how the works facilitate a rare intergenerational dialogue.

“Somebody who’s practicing today may be talking to an artist who died 300 years ago,” he explained.

He referenced contemporary South African artist Johannes Phokela, whose work frequently engages with themes found in centuries-old European art. “So, there’s a conversation going on there between European art and South African art.”

Gule added that he and co-curator Same Mdluli made a deliberate effort to ensure the touring collection features more African pieces, shifting from its previously Eurocentric orientation.

The Homecoming Exhibition also includes Asian works, offering audiences an enriched and multidimensional experience.

French Ambassador David Partition described art as a profound cultural compass. “Art is a force, it is a heritage, it is a compass. It’s their treasure, and it says so much about our history, our joint history,” he said.

A New Chapter for JAG Amid Restoration Efforts

Partition noted that the century-old artworks now on display continue to inspire contemporary creators—a sentiment shared by Gule, who recalled how the pieces he encountered at JAG during his youth shaped his own path.

“Just being in the presence of art can be quite a powerful, life-changing experience,” he said.

Gule emphasised that art is not only valuable to artists and enthusiasts but also essential in safeguarding collective memory.

As the Johannesburg Art Gallery prepares for critical repairs to its ageing infrastructure, Standard Bank will temporarily take custodianship of the collection during the refurbishment period.

At Thursday’s launch, Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero assured attendees that the renovations would be completed within two years—a timeline the city remains confident it will meet.
