14-Year-Old Pedestrian Killed By Car Driven By 12-Year-Old In Gauteng

A tragic road accident in Brakpan has left a 14-year-old pedestrian dead and raised alarm over road safety after it was revealed that a 12-year-old boy allegedly drove the vehicle involved. The incident occurred on Saturday at the intersection of Northdene and Medeley Street.

Emergency medical personnel responded swiftly but were unable to save the teenage pedestrian, who was declared deceased at the scene. Officers from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department’s (EMPD) Accident Bureau also arrived to investigate the circumstances.

Child Driver Allegedly Ignored Stop Sign Before Collision

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed that the vehicle involved, a Mazda, was being operated by a minor at the time of the crash.

“At the scene, officers found a Mazda that allegedly bumped the pedestrian driven by a 12-year-old driver,” Dlamini stated. “It is alleged that the driver, a 12-year-old teen, who used the motor vehicle and disobeyed a stop sign and collided with the pedestrian.”

How the child gained access to the vehicle remains under investigation.

Legal Steps Taken as SAPS Investigates

Following the crash, the underage driver was turned in to Brakpan SAPS by a guardian. Authorities have since opened a case, and the young suspect is expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court in the coming days.

“The suspect is expected to appear in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court soon,” Dlamini added.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern throughout the community, highlighting the dangers of unsupervised minors gaining access to vehicles. Law enforcement continues to investigate as Brakpan mourns the tragic loss of a young life.
