11-Year-Old Kraaifontein Girl Killed In Gang Crossfire, Two Others Injured

An 11-year-old girl has been shot and killed in a suspected gang-related crossfire in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, leaving her family and community devastated. The tragic shooting occurred on Tuesday evening at around 7:20 pm on Mti Street.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed the incident, saying three people were shot, including two children.

“Kraaifontein police registered a case of murder and two counts of attempted murder following a shooting incident on Tuesday, where an 11-year-old female was shot and fatally wounded, and an eight-year-old female and a 20-year-old male were injured,” Van Wyk said.

Children Caught in Crossfire

According to police reports, the young victims were playing outside when an unknown suspect approached and began firing shots in the street. All three were struck by stray bullets.

“The 11-year-old female victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. Both the injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,” Van Wyk confirmed.

The suspect fled the scene and remains at large. Authorities believe the shooting is linked to ongoing gang violence in the area.

Community Outrage Over Gang Violence in Cape Town

The killing has reignited anger over gang violence in Cape Town’s townships. Ilitha Labantu spokesperson Siyabulela Monakali said the tragedy highlights the ongoing dangers children face in unsafe communities.

“That an 11-year-old child lost her life while playing outside is an indictment of a society that has failed to prioritise the safety of its most vulnerable members,” Monakali said. “Gang violence is rooted in poverty, inequality, and neglect. Until these systemic failures are addressed, children will continue to die, families will continue to grieve, and communities will continue to be terrorised.”
