10-Year Sentence For Man Who Raped Friend’s Wife

A 39-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping his friend’s wife. This crime took place in May 2022 in Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, when a group of friends gathered for drinks following a funeral.

During the gathering, the victim, a 44-year-old woman, decided to return home early, leaving her husband at an entertainment venue.

“The victim (the woman) felt tired and decided to call it a day. They all got into a car and dropped her at home. Thereafter, they went back for entertainment and the house was locked by the victim’s husband,” said Mpumalanga provincial police spokesperson, Colonel Donald Mdhluli.

Circumstances of the Crime

After dropping off the woman at her home, the friends returned to the venue to continue their evening. However, the man who would become the perpetrator made a disturbing decision.

He managed to obtain the house keys and returned to the victim’s residence leaving the friend at the venue. While the woman slept, the accused entered her room and violated her.

According to Colonial Donald Mdhluli, from the Mpumalanga provincial police, the incident was reported to authorities shortly after, leading to an investigation by the specialized Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit.

The Legal Outcome

Following a thorough investigation that included multiple court appearances, the man was convicted and recently received his sentence on October 28, 2024. Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, the acting provincial commissioner of police, praised the dedicated work of investigators and the judiciary in ensuring justice was served.

He stated, “We are definitely addressing the scourge of gender-based violence,” affirming the importance of keeping such offenders away from society.
