Meyerton Taxi Rank Shootout: Police Recover 10 AK-47s As Taxi Violence Escalates

Chaos broke out at the Meyerton taxi rank, south of Johannesburg, on Tuesday morning when a shootout between two rival security companies left one person wounded and a trail of high-powered weapons behind. Police have confirmed that a case of attempted murder is under investigation following the dramatic incident.

“According to reports, members from two security companies were shooting at each other and one of them sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital,” said police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

While combing the scene, police made a staggering discovery—10 AK-47 rifles and nine 9mm pistols were recovered at the rank.

Amid the chaos, false rumours began to circulate that a scholar had been caught in the crossfire. However, authorities were quick to dismiss the claim after confirming with nearby schools.

“The reports that one scholar was shot are not true, since the police went to the school and verified that no scholar was injured during the shooting,” said Nevhuhulwi.

Police investigations are ongoing, and authorities have urged the public to report any information related to the incident to the SAPS Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111.

Taxi Violence Surges Again: Three Killed in Soweto Ambush

The Meyerton shootout is the latest flare-up in what appears to be a broader resurgence of taxi-related violence in Gauteng. Just last month, three men were gunned down in an ambush believed to be linked to taxi route disputes in Soweto.

Police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said: “The incident is believed to be taxi-related. The victims all belong to a taxi association. High-calibre cartridges were found on the scene. At this stage, no one has been arrested. However, I can assure you that police are working non-stop to ensure the suspects are arrested.”

The deceased were reportedly part of the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA) route monitoring squad and were ambushed en route to their main offices.

WATA spokesperson Hamilton Miya said, “A silver vehicle reportedly opened fire on them, killing all occupants instantly.”

As law enforcement continues to probe these deadly incidents, concerns are mounting over the escalating violence in the taxi industry, often marked by power struggles, route battles, and heavy weaponry.
